Academic Staff

Meet the professors, senior lecturers and researchers who teach, supervise and drive scholarship across the ten faculties of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo.

A Teaching and Research Community

The academic staff of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo (FUSTKABO) form the intellectual engine of the University. Drawn from within Kano State, across Nigeria and from the Nigerian academic diaspora, they combine classroom teaching, laboratory supervision, clinical instruction, community service and original research in line with the University's mandate as a specialised science and technology institution.

Following the University's transition from Federal Polytechnic Kabo, a deliberate programme of academic staff conversion, upgrading and fresh recruitment was undertaken. Serving polytechnic lecturers who met National Universities Commission (NUC) requirements were absorbed into appropriate university cadres, while a large-scale recruitment exercise brought in professors, readers and senior lecturers to anchor the new faculties, particularly in Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Nursing Sciences.

All academic appointments are made by the Governing Council on the recommendation of the Appointments and Promotions Committee (Academic), guided by the University Statutes, the Conditions of Service and NUC Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) staffing requirements for each programme.

Academic vacancies are advertised in at least two national newspapers and on the University website. Shortlisted candidates deliver a seminar to the departmental academic board, sit before a Faculty Appointments Committee and, for senior positions from Reader upwards, are subjected to external assessment by three professors from other universities before Council approval.

Conditions of service follow the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) and the collective agreements negotiated with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Staff enjoy contributory pension under the Pension Reform Act, the National Health Insurance Authority scheme, group life assurance, a car refurbishment loan facility and access to on-campus staff housing at the Kabo permanent site.

The University operates a firm equal-opportunity policy. Applications from women are strongly encouraged, particularly in Engineering and Computing, where a female academic staff target of 30 per cent by 2030 has been adopted by Senate.
