OUR IDENTITY
Motto, Colours and Coat of Arms
The motto, colours, coat of arms, anthem and guiding philosophy that together express what the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo stands for.
An Identity with Meaning
Every element of the University's visual and ceremonial identity was chosen deliberately by the Governing Council on the recommendation of a committee drawn from Senate, Congregation and the host community. None of it is decorative. The motto states the University's theory of knowledge; the coat of arms encodes its disciplines and its place; the colours are worn at matriculation, convocation and by every team that represents FUSTKABO in competition.
These marks are also legal property. The name, coat of arms, logo and seal of the University are protected, and their use on any publication, garment, certificate, website or product requires the written authorisation of the Registrar. This matters practically: fraudulent use of a university's marks is a common vehicle for admission scams and certificate forgery, and the University pursues such cases.
The Coat of Arms
The University's coat of arms brings together the disciplines it teaches and the place in which it stands. It is used on certificates, transcripts, the University seal, ceremonial regalia and formal correspondence, and it is the anchor of the FUSTKABO visual identity.
The shield is quartered. In the upper field, an open book represents scholarship and the primacy of learning; beside it, a cogwheel stands for engineering, technology and applied practice. In the lower field, a flask and a rod of Asclepius denote the pure sciences and the health sciences respectively — the two great pillars of the University's academic mandate. A rising sun behind the shield signifies a new institution and the dawn of opportunity for the communities it serves.
Beneath the shield, a scroll carries the motto. Encircling the whole is the full name of the University with its year of establishment, in the University's green and gold.
- Open book — scholarship, learning and the pursuit of truth
- Cogwheel — engineering, technology and applied competence
- Flask — the pure and laboratory sciences
- Rod of Asclepius — medicine, nursing, pharmacy and allied health
- Rising sun — a new university and new opportunity for its communities
- Scroll and motto — knowledge proved by service
Motto, Colours and Marks
The core elements of the FUSTKABO identity and what each signifies.
The Motto
Ilimi, Sana'a, Hidima
“Knowledge, Skill, Service.” Three words in sequence, not three words in a list: the University holds that knowledge is incomplete until it becomes skill, and skill is incomplete until it is placed at the service of others.
University Colours
Green · Gold · White
Deep green and gold, with white as the neutral. Green for the agricultural landscape of Kabo and for growth; gold for excellence and for the value of what is produced here; white for integrity and clarity of purpose.
Coat of Arms and Seal
Protected marks
The full armorial achievement is reserved for certificates, transcripts, the University seal and ceremonial use. The simplified logo is used for digital, print and signage applications.
The University Anthem
Three verses
Sung at matriculation, convocation and formal University ceremonies, the anthem sets the motto to music and celebrates learning, honest work and service to the nation.
The Visitor
Constitutional office
As a federal university, FUSTKABO's Visitor is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who appoints the Governing Council and the Vice-Chancellor and may conduct a formal Visitation to the University.
Academic Dress
Convocation regalia
Graduands wear the University gown with faculty-coloured hood facings. Professorial and officer robes carry gold trim, and the Vice-Chancellor's robe is worn with the University chain of office at convocation.
Our Philosophy
The philosophy of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo is that knowledge is proved by application. This is not a rejection of theory — no serious engineer, physician or scientist can work without it. It is a rejection of the idea that theory alone is sufficient evidence of competence.
The practical consequences run through the whole institution. Curricula pair every substantial theoretical course with laboratory, workshop, studio, clinical or field practice. Assessment carries a genuine practical weighting, so that a student cannot pass a technical course on written examination alone. Industrial attachment is compulsory where it is professionally meaningful. Final-year projects are expected to address identifiable problems, and the University prefers a modest project that works to an ambitious one that exists only on paper.
The same philosophy governs research. The University supports curiosity-driven scholarship, but its institutional priorities are the problems of its own region: reliable energy in communities the grid serves poorly, water quality and supply, post-harvest loss and agricultural processing, maternal and child health outcomes, and the digitalisation of public services. Research that improves life in Kano State and the North-West is research this University considers itself to exist for.
Core Values in Practice
How the University's stated values translate into rules and behaviour that staff and students can actually observe.
- Excellence — programmes are not opened until staffing and facilities meet NUC standards, and results are moderated by external examiners.
- Integrity — examination malpractice, plagiarism and the sale of grades or admission attract the heaviest sanctions available to Senate and Council.
- Inclusion — admission is on merit within the Federal Character framework, with active outreach to women and to candidates from educationally disadvantaged communities.
- Innovation — final-year projects, entrepreneurship training and an innovation hub encourage students to build, not only to describe.
- Service — community outreach through health screening, technical support and public lectures is an expectation of faculties, not an optional extra.
- Responsibility — laboratory and workshop safety training is compulsory, and environmental care is embedded in campus planning and in the curriculum.
- Discipline — punctuality, dress and conduct standards apply to staff and students alike, and are enforced consistently.
- Accountability — budgets, appointments and promotions follow published criteria and are subject to Council and audit scrutiny.
