Scholarships & Financial Support

Federal, state, corporate and university-funded awards that help FUSTKABO students meet the cost of study — and exactly how to apply for each of them.

Support for Students Who Earn It and Students Who Need It

Tuition at FUSTKABO is free to Nigerian undergraduates, but registration, laboratory, accommodation and living costs remain real obstacles for many families. The university therefore operates a Scholarships and Student Financial Support Office that administers its own awards and helps students access external schemes.

Awards fall into two broad categories. Merit awards recognise outstanding academic performance and are competitive. Need-based support is directed at students from low-income households, orphans, students with disabilities and those whose circumstances changed unexpectedly during their studies.

External schemes — federal, state and corporate — are advertised on this page and on the student portal as soon as they open. Deadlines are set by the sponsoring bodies and are strictly enforced, so check regularly rather than waiting for a notification.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

The process below applies to university-administered awards. External schemes follow the sponsor's own procedure, but the supporting documents required from the university are the same.

1

Check which schemes are currently open

Open the Scholarships section of the student portal, where every live scheme is listed with its value, eligibility criteria and closing date. Announcements are also posted on faculty notice boards and the university news page.

2

Confirm you meet the eligibility criteria

Check your CGPA on the portal, and confirm any category requirement — state of origin, discipline, level of study or verified need. Applications from candidates who do not meet the stated criteria are rejected without review.

3

Assemble your supporting documents

Prepare your admission letter, current academic transcript or statement of result, certificate of state of origin, birth certificate, passport photograph and evidence of the need or achievement on which the claim is based.

4

Complete the scholarship application form

Fill in the form on the portal, including your bank account details in your own name and your bank verification number. Awards cannot be paid into an account held in another person's name.

5

Obtain your Head of Department's endorsement

Merit and need-based awards require an endorsement confirming your academic standing and, where applicable, a recommendation from your level coordinator. Allow at least five working days for this step.

6

Submit before the deadline

Submit online and print the acknowledgement slip. Late applications are not accepted for any scheme, and the university cannot make an exception for an external sponsor's deadline.

7

Attend any test or interview

Several schemes, notably the Federal Scholarship Board and NNPC awards, require a qualifying test or interview. Invitations are issued by e-mail and through the portal, usually with two weeks' notice.

8

Track the outcome and accept the award

Results appear on the portal and are communicated by e-mail. Successful applicants complete an award acceptance form, after which disbursement follows the schedule set by the sponsor.

The Indigent Student Support Fund

No student admitted to FUSTKABO on merit should be forced to withdraw for want of money. The Indigent Student Support Fund exists for exactly that situation, and it is financed from the university's internally generated revenue, alumni contributions and donations from partners in Kano State and beyond.

Applications are assessed by a committee drawn from the Student Affairs Division, the Bursary and the faculties, with a home verification visit or a report from a social welfare officer where circumstances require it. Assessment is confidential and beneficiaries are never identified publicly.

Support is reviewed at the end of each session. Beneficiaries are expected to maintain a CGPA of 2.50 or above, to keep a clean disciplinary record, and to contribute a small number of volunteer hours to campus community projects.

  • Covers registration and faculty charges in full or in part.
  • Accommodation support where a hall place has been allocated.
  • A modest monthly stipend toward meals and transport.
  • Priority access to the work-study programme.
  • Applications accepted at any point in the session.

Deadlines Are Fixed and Strictly Enforced

Every scheme on this page has a closing date set by the body funding it. Applications submitted after the deadline are not reviewed, and neither the Scholarships Office nor the sponsoring organisation can reopen a closed portal.

Check the Scholarships section of the student portal at least fortnightly during the session. External schemes frequently open with only three to four weeks' notice, and a slow start on document gathering is the most common reason capable students miss out.

No scholarship administered or advertised by FUSTKABO requires payment of any kind. Any request for a fee to "process", "secure" or "release" an award is fraudulent and should be reported to scholarships@fustkabo.edu.ng immediately.

Scholarship Questions

Can I hold more than one scholarship at the same time?
You may hold a university award alongside an external scheme, provided neither sponsor prohibits it. You may not, however, hold two internal FUSTKABO awards covering the same costs. Declare every award you hold on the application form; non-disclosure is treated as a disciplinary matter and can lead to withdrawal of both awards.
Are scholarships available to fresh students in 100 level?
Most merit awards require a university CGPA and are therefore open from 200 level. Need-based support, the Orphan and Vulnerable Student Grant and the Students with Disabilities Support Grant are available to fresh students from the point of registration.
What happens if my CGPA falls below the threshold?
Merit awards are reviewed at the end of each session. A beneficiary who falls below the stated CGPA is placed on notice for one session, and the award lapses if performance has not recovered by the following review. Need-based support is not withdrawn on academic grounds alone, but beneficiaries are referred to the academic counselling unit.
How and when are awards paid?
University awards are applied directly against your portal account where they cover charges, and any cash element is paid to the bank account you provided, in your own name. External awards are disbursed by the sponsoring body on its own schedule, which the university does not control.
I am not an indigene of Kano State. Which awards can I apply for?
All federal schemes, corporate awards and every university-administered scholarship are open to Nigerian students regardless of state of origin. Only the Kano State Scholarship Board award is restricted to indigenes; you should also check the scholarship board of your own state of origin, most of which run comparable schemes.
Do postgraduate students qualify?
Yes for TETFund staff-development and research grants and for several external schemes. The university's merit and need-based awards described on this page are for undergraduate students; postgraduate support is administered through the School of Postgraduate Studies.
Who do I contact for help with a scholarship application?
The Scholarships and Student Financial Support Office, Student Affairs Division, at scholarships@fustkabo.edu.ng. Include your matriculation number and the name of the scheme in your message. Walk-in enquiries are received on the Kabo campus on weekdays between 9am and 3pm.
