ACADEMICS

Postgraduate Programmes

Advanced study and supervised research at Postgraduate Diploma, Master's, M.Phil and Doctoral levels across the University's ten faculties.

The School of Postgraduate Studies

The School of Postgraduate Studies (SPGS) at the Federal University of Science and Technology, Kabo coordinates all advanced degree programmes of the University. Established alongside the University's transition from Federal Polytechnic Kabo, the School builds on decades of applied, industry-facing training and reorients it towards rigorous scholarship, supervised research and technology transfer.

Our postgraduate offerings are deliberately concentrated in areas where the University holds genuine depth: computing and cyber security, applied and industrial sciences, engineering, the built environment, biomedical and allied health sciences, and management. Every programme is run under regulations approved by the University Senate and benchmarked against the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards for postgraduate education.

Teaching is delivered in small cohorts, with a taught component followed by an independent research project or thesis. Candidates are attached to a principal supervisor from their department and, where the work is interdisciplinary, a co-supervisor from a collaborating faculty. Research seminars are held every semester and all candidates must present at least once before submission.

Levels of Postgraduate Study

Four routes are available, each with its own entry standard, duration and exit requirement.

Postgraduate Diploma (PGD)

2-4 semesters

A conversion and upgrading route for HND holders and graduates with a Third Class or Pass degree. Taught coursework plus a supervised project report. A PGD at Credit level or above qualifies a candidate to proceed to a Master's programme.

Master of Science (M.Sc / M.Eng / MPH)

3-4 semesters

Taught Master's degrees combining advanced coursework, a research methodology core and a supervised dissertation of between 15,000 and 25,000 words defended before an internal panel.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil)

4 semesters

A research-intensive intermediate degree for candidates whose Master's CGPA falls between 3.50 and 3.99. Successful M.Phil candidates may be converted to the PhD register after a satisfactory upgrade seminar.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

6-10 semesters

Original, examinable research producing a thesis of 60,000 to 80,000 words, defended at an oral examination before an External Examiner appointed by Senate. A minimum of two publications in reputable journals is required before defence.

Professional and Fellowship Routes

Modular delivery

Selected faculties run professional Master's and residency-linked programmes for practising clinicians, engineers and estate professionals, delivered in modular blocks to accommodate employment.

Part-Time and Weekend Mode

Fri-Sat contact

PGD and taught Master's programmes are available part-time, with lectures scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays. Part-time candidates take a reduced load and complete in a longer maximum period.

How to Apply

Applications for the 2026/2027 session open in July and close at the end of October. The whole process is completed online.

1

Create a portal account

Register on the FUSTKABO Postgraduate Application Portal using a valid e-mail address and Nigerian phone number. Your login details are sent to both immediately.

2

Pay the application fee

Generate a Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) from the portal and pay the non-refundable application fee of fifteen thousand naira at any commercial bank or online. Payment is confirmed automatically.

3

Complete the application form

Fill in your biodata, academic history, employment record and programme choice. Choose your mode of study (full-time or part-time) carefully; a change after admission requires the approval of the Board of Postgraduate Studies.

4

Upload supporting documents

Scan and upload your O'Level result, degree certificate, academic transcript, NYSC certificate, birth certificate or declaration of age, and a recent passport photograph on a white background.

5

Submit a research proposal

M.Phil and PhD applicants must upload a research proposal of not more than 2,000 words setting out the problem, objectives, a brief literature justification and a proposed methodology.

6

Request transcripts

Ask each previous institution to forward your official transcript directly to the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies, FUSTKABO, Kabo, Kano State. Admission is provisional until transcripts are received.

7

Attend screening and interview

Shortlisted candidates are invited for a departmental screening interview. Research-degree candidates defend their proposal before the departmental postgraduate committee.

8

Accept your offer and register

Successful candidates print their admission letter from the portal, pay the prescribed fees within the stated deadline, and complete course registration and matriculation.

Beware of fraudulent agents

FUSTKABO does not employ agents and does not accept cash payments for admission. All fees are paid through Remita against an RRR generated from the official portal. Any person demanding money for an admission offer is acting fraudulently and should be reported to the Directorate of Security Services at security@fustkabo.edu.ng.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply with a Higher National Diploma?
Yes. HND holders at Lower Credit and above may apply for the Postgraduate Diploma in a cognate discipline. On completing the PGD with a CGPA of 3.50 or above you become eligible for direct entry into the corresponding Master's programme.
Do you accept part-time PhD candidates?
Doctoral study at FUSTKABO is full-time by regulation. However, candidates in employment may apply to the Board of Postgraduate Studies for non-residential status, which requires attendance at all scheduled seminars and a minimum of one week of laboratory or fieldwork residency each semester.
What is the maximum period allowed for completion?
A PGD must be completed within four semesters full-time or six part-time; a taught Master's within six semesters full-time or eight part-time; and a PhD within ten semesters. Extensions beyond the maximum require the approval of Senate on the recommendation of the Board of Postgraduate Studies, and are granted for one semester at a time.
Is there a qualifying examination for the PhD?
Yes. All PhD candidates sit a comprehensive qualifying examination at the end of their taught coursework, covering the core of the discipline and the candidate's area of specialisation. A candidate who fails at the second attempt may be advised to withdraw or offered the M.Phil as a terminal award.
How many publications do I need before my defence?
A PhD candidate must have at least two articles published or formally accepted in reputable, peer-reviewed journals indexed in a recognised database, with the candidate as first author and the supervisor as co-author. Master's candidates are encouraged but not required to publish.
Are scholarships available?
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) sponsors staff of Nigerian public tertiary institutions. FUSTKABO also awards a limited number of graduate assistantships each session, which carry a fee waiver and a monthly stipend in exchange for teaching and laboratory support duties. Applications are made to the Directorate of Academic Planning after first-semester results are released.
Can I transfer credits from another university?
Candidates who have completed comparable postgraduate coursework elsewhere may apply for credit transfer of up to one third of the taught component, subject to verification of transcripts and the approval of the Board of Postgraduate Studies. Research and dissertation credits are never transferable.
What is the language of instruction?
All programmes are taught and examined in English. Applicants from non-English-speaking systems must present evidence of proficiency acceptable to the School.
